Writing in the Face of F*ck

A Conversation about Creative Courage & Courageous Creativity with Susan Vespoli

How do we make art in the wake of incalculable loss? How do we engage with our grief, anger, guilt, and pain without losing our relationship to tenderness? And how does creative expression help us find the gifts, if any, from the wreckage? In this Zoom conversation, poets Maya Stein & Susan Vespoli discuss what it means to “write in the face of f*ck.” Susan will also be sharing selected poems from her latest collection, One of Them Was Mine, written after losing her son, Adam, to police violence on March 12, 2022.

Poet Alison Luterman writes about the book, “These extraordinary poems, written in the raw days of early grief are life-lines, elegies, ghost messages, and cradle-songs. They are space blankets to wrap around the unhoused soul at four in the morning under a concrete underpass. They are food for the hungry, and coffee for the faithful who have kept vigil.”

This conversation is for anyone wrestling with a story that insists on being told and who wonders how to navigate the difficult bridge between life, loss, and art.

The event takes place on Zoom and will be recorded.
