still
It doesn't matter that the sun was already heading south, the air
cooling by degrees. The water would have been frigid for a swim,
yet we watched teenagers mount the winter waves like a dare
to the ocean itself. From the shore, I suppose we, too, felt the whim
of the day, and as we tucked ourselves inside the blanket,
a warmth encircled us. However briefly, we lay two-sided,
balanced like spoons, and I allowed myself the lavish thought
that we could stay still like this as long as we needed.
Of course, evening slid in, a fact of life both cruel and clever,
though something clung there when we left, like a fragment of forever.
