potential in Iowa
Not because you know that land. Not because you can say, for certain,
what you will find there, nosing your way through the back roads.
Not because of history, or whimsy, or a milestone
waiting to be breached. Not because there is something
to be re-opened or closed for good. Sometimes, you turn your head
toward the smallest sound simply because it's the one
you haven't heard yet. And just that pause is enough to recognize a glimmer
of the not-yet-but-possibly spectacular. And you inch forward because, if anything,
you know what it is to be in camouflage, veiled by the celebrity of flashier geographies.
And you know how you stretch and glow when, at last, you're seen.
