where were you today?
On hold with customer service. In line with a box of cereal and peanut butter and peaches.
At the gas pump eyeing the rapid ascent of numbers. Searching the want ads. Doing load
after load of laundry. Writing a check for the plumber who didn’t fix the leak. Wondering
why the headache was still there. Watching videos of skydivers in wingsuits,
threading a needle through a slim canyon. Checking the calendar for the umpteenth time.
Thinking of how to break the news gently. Wishing certain things could be taken back.
In the fulcrum grip of “before” and “after.” At the intersection of “should” and “can’t.”
Behind a slow-moving vehicle. On the other side of a door. Facing a mirror. Praying.
Wherever you were, I hope you remembered it was temporary, that the balance would tip,
eventually. That you would find your way to the center of what mattered, and rest there.
