no small thing

“Find your calling this spring” reads the fishing lure of a subject line in an email
I’ve opened mid-morning. I click and a trio of faces looks transcendently back at me.
Below, a paragraph suggests “practical tools” and “time-tested techniques” to uncover
my path and live the life I deserve. I picture an aural glow of benevolence, an energy field
rich in antioxidant affirmation. I imagine my hands hovering over objects and steeping
in a chorus of vibrational prayers. In this fantasy, beams of light are everywhere,
suggesting angels are nearby, communicating through the gloss of a bowl of fruit.
The day plods on. I wipe up a counter. I empty the trash. I make two slices of toast,
think about a friend I haven’t seen in years, and find myself briefly absent of worry,
which is no small thing. Some might even say, a miracle.
